Collard M, et al. Muscadine Grape Extract Reduces Lung and Liver Metastasis in Mice with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in Association with Changes in the Gut Microbiome. Curr Dev Nutr. 2019;3(Suppl 1):P05-017-19.
The goal of this preclinical study was to determine if supplementation with a proprietary muscadine grape seed and skin extract would inhibit triple negative breast cancer metastasis and potentially alter gut microbiota. Mice in the treatment group received muscadine extract for 4 weeks. Results showed a significant reduction in metastatic proliferation in the lungs and livers of treated mice compared with controls, along with an associated alteration the gut microbiome. These results suggest muscadine grape extract may be an effective treatment against triple negative breast cancer metastasis.
Duncan AV, et al. Beneficial Cardiovascular Effects of Muscadine Grape Extract in Normotensive Female Rats. FASEB J. 2016;30(Suppl 1):1175.
In this preclinical study, researchers investigated the effect of supplementation with a proprietary muscadine grape extract on cardiovascular and metabolic variables in female rats with normal blood pressure. Treated rats received muscadine grape extract for 4 weeks. At the end of the study, muscadine supplemented rats exhibited significantly lower systolic blood pressure compared with controls, suggesting muscadine grape extract may have beneficial cardioprotective and renoprotective effects.
Duncan AV, et al. Muscadine Grape Extract Improves Exercise Capacity and Reduces Oxidative Stress in Aging Transgenic (mRen2)27 Hypertensive Female Rats. FASEB J. 2017;31(Suppl 1):793.12.
The aim of this preclinical study was to investigate the effects of long term supplementation with a muscadine grape extract containing significant levels of polyphenolic substances. Specifically, the impact of supplementation on blood pressure, adiposity, exercise tolerance and oxidative stress in aging female rats was examined. After 56 weeks of supplementation, muscadine extract-treated rats exhibited a 240% improvement in workload compared to controls. Additionally, time to fatigue with exercise was improved by 230% and a key marker of oxidative stress was lower in the treatment group compared with controls. These results suggest that muscadine grape extract supplementation may markedly improve exercise capacity through mitigating oxidative stress.
Patil PD, et al. Anti-fibrotic and Anti-oxidant Actions of a Muscadine Grape Extract Supplement on Hypertension-induced Cardiac Damage. Hypertension. 2017;70(Suppl 1):AP193.
In this preclinical study, researchers investigated the effects of muscadine grape extract supplementation on hypertension-induced cardiac damage in rats. All study subjects were given Angiotensin II, a drug that raises blood pressure, while the treatment group was co-administered muscadine grape extract. After 4 weeks, the muscadine extract treated rats showed significantly reduced impact of Angiotensin II administration, specifically around mediators of cardiac fibrosis, compared to controls. These results suggest that muscadine grape extract supplementation may be an effective natural treatment for hypertension-induced cardiac damage.
Rayalat F, et al. Muscadine Grape Extract Improves Arterial Stiffness in Hypertensive (mRen2)27 Female Rats. FASEB J. 2018;32(Suppl 1):841.4.
The goal of this preclinical study was to investigate the effects of supplementation with muscadine grape extract on the development of arterial stiffness in hypertensive female rats. After 15 weeks of supplementation, indices of arterial stiffness were significantly lower in the treatment group compared with controls. These results suggest that chronic intake of muscadine grape extract may have a beneficial effect on overall cardiovascular health.
